When calculating the date of sowing seeds, it should be borne in mind that at the time of transplanting seedlings into open ground, seedlings should have 2-3 true leaves. You should focus on the growing season. For tomatoes, from the moment of sowing the seeds to replanting the grown seedlings, it should take about 2 months for this reason, it is better to sow the crop in February or early March. Seedlings of squash, pumpkin grows in just a month. When determining the timing of planting, you need to focus on the characteristics of the cultivation of each crop.

Sowing seeds

In central Russia, sowing seeds for seedlings or in open ground can be done from late February to early June, depending on the crop. Some vegetables and herbs can be planted throughout the summer or even sown in the ground in the fall. It all depends on the sensitivity to the length of daylight hours, on the growing season.

For very early production, seedlings can be sown from the end of January. But in this case, the plants need additional lighting. The daylight hours are still too short, so it is impossible to grow seedlings without the use of special lamps.

The longest growing seasons are for tomatoes, peppers, eggplants. All of these plants need to be grown through seedlings. In central Russia, you can sow the seeds of these crops in late February or early March, in order to plant seedlings in a greenhouse in early May. If you plan to grow tomatoes or eggplants in the open field, it is better to sow seedlings from mid to late March in order to plant seedlings in the beds at the end of May. Favorable days for central Russia are February 24-29, March 1-7, March 24-30.

Before sowing, it is better to soak the seeds in a solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes. The solution should be weak (pale pink). Better to sow seeds in a common box. The distance between them should be about 1 cm. Subsequently, the seedlings must be dived (transplanted into separate pots). It is better to cover the box with sown seeds with foil and put in a warm place. After emergence, the film can be removed. This technique helps to keep the soil moist, which promotes rapid seed germination.

For central Russia, it is better to choose early and mid-season varieties of Solanaceae. Such crops have time to mature before the onset of cold weather. This is especially true for tomatoes, as in some regions fogs start from mid-August, and it gets cold at night. The risk of late blight increases, so you need to have time to collect the main crop before this moment.

Seedling picking

Approximately 3 weeks after the emergence of seedlings, the seedlings should be dived. Vegetable growers determine the timing of picking themselves. The features of the development of various cultures, the rate of their growth, are important. At the time of transplanting into separate pots, the height of the seedlings should be up to 5 cm. There is no need to wait for the formation of the first true leaves. Plants are transplanted at the stage of cotyledonous leaf formation.

When picking, it is important not to damage the root system of the plants. This can lead to disease or even death of the seedlings. Some crops do not tolerate transplanting well, so they are grown without picking. Cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins are sown immediately in separate pots.

To make the seedlings easier to transfer the transplant, you must first spray them with Epin's solution or other growth stimulant. After such treatment, the plants take root better, actively grow.

Sowing seeds and planting seedlings in open ground

In central Russia, many crops can be grown by direct sowing into the ground. This applies to carrots, beets, herbs, salads, cucumbers. In open ground, you can sow pumpkins, zucchini. You need to focus only on the weather conditions, on the peculiarities of the agricultural technology of individual crops. Cold-resistant plants (beets, carrots, cabbage) can be sown in late April or early May. Heat-loving crops (zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers) should be sown later. In 2021, the optimal dates for sowing in open ground are May 1-6, as well as May 23-30.

It is better to plan the transplanting of seedlings in open ground also in May. Heat-loving crops can be covered with foil by installing an arc on the garden bed. In late spring, when the weather is warm, the portable greenhouse can be removed. You should not sow seeds and transplant seedlings into soil that has not warmed up to +10 degrees. In such soil, seeds are unlikely to germinate.

When transplanting plants, you need to feed them (with ash, phosphorus-potassium fertilizer). Adding small amounts of nutrients to the soil helps the plants cope with the stress of replanting. Top dressing can be foliar. In the waxing moon phase, leaf fertilizers are very effective.

Planting trees and shrubs

It is necessary to plant trees and shrubs on certain days. This applies not only to sowing seeds, seeds for growing fruit crops, but also to transplanting seedlings. All this work must be done strictly on the waxing moon. If in some cases it is impossible to delay the transplantation of seedlings, then the transplantation of seedlings to a permanent place can be planned in advance, since it does not require urgency. Even store-bought trees do not have to be planted right away. The seedlings are sold with a closed root system. They can simply be put in a cool place and watered from time to time until they are transferred to the site.

The trees are replanted in early spring or late autumn. During these periods, sap flow slows down. The survival rate of seedlings is maximum. Shrubs can be replanted in the summer, but it is better to do this also in early spring or late autumn. In 2021, you can plan a transplant for March 25-31. It is permissible to plant trees in April, but only from the 1st to the 7th. In the fall, it is better to plan a transplant for October 17-31.

Heat-loving tree varieties (cherries, peaches, apricots) are best replanted in spring. Over the summer and autumn, the seedlings will take root, get stronger and successfully survive the winter. If such fruit crops are planted before winter, they may die during severe frosts. Even a shelter does not guarantee the safety of immature trees.

Experienced gardeners recommend not to violate the timing of planting trees. If the seedlings are planted too late, they will not have time to go through the hardening period, they will hurt. At least 3-4 weeks should pass before the onset of frost. It is too late to replant trees in November, but lately, warm winters have been observed in central Russia. If the prognosis is favorable, you can take the risk by replanting shrubs or seedlings of fruit crops in the last month of autumn.
